ALTERNATE UNIVERSE CHARACTER out of character NAME: Caitlin RP EXPERIENCE: In mrsbellariddle INTENDED JOURNAL: lady_vira CONTACT: email-mrsbellariddle@gmail.com, aim- mrsbellaridlle and cdj mrsbellariddle HOW DID YOU FIND US? On one of the advertisement communities, I think.
character NAME: Mary Marvoltia Riddle (Mary Riddle III), but having despised her filthy muggle name she has christened herself Lady Viraldermort (Yes, unlike Voldemort it does have an extra 'r' in the name, but it makes it a perfect anagram). It is a fairly new addition and she has only told a small number of people. AGE/BIRTHDATE: 17/31st December 1926 MAGICAL BLOODLINE: Half blood, but she will never admit it. Instead, she hides the truth and will inform others she is a pureblood. ALIGNMENT: Herself. FORMER OCCUPATION: Student DESIRED OCCUPATION: Student SEXUALITY: Heterosexual
CHANGES FROM CANON UNIVERSE AND WHY: Gender swap universe. Self explanatory, all characters are gender swapped. DATE FROM: 1944 SUMMARY OF EFFECTS ON CHARACTER: A part from the obvious fact that she is a Mary and not a Tom, her key characteristics and history are similar. However, the gender swaps impact on Tom Sr (in this world Mary Sr) and Merope (in this world Merrion), Mary Sr still left Merrion and gave birth in the safety of the Riddle House to Mary Jr. However, unwilling to look after the child who had been a source of such horrible memories and experiences, she gave her to an orphanage where she grew up as usual.
As well, there are some slight changes in her personality. Inside, Mary is virtually the same: Her goals have not changed nor has her inability to love, her arrogance and her ambitions to rule, etc. However, to the outside, she plays her part even better than male Tom. She charms, she flirts, she simpers and she uses her looks even more so than in canon. Often appearing completely innocent, she hides the truth deep inside. She could compliment others, especially males to make them think that they are in control when really she has been pulling the strings even more. Though, she does despise having to act that way and her true ambition is when she can make those strings visible and cut down everyone in her path. She does have a group of 'friends' around her and having gained their loyalty she reveals her truth self and demands the respect she deserves.
APPEARANCE:
Mary is clearly a striking and attractive women. To her immense displeasure, most of her features are taken from her mother. Her face is thin and angular with high cheek bones, pale complexion and dark blue eyes. Her frame is similar being tall and thin. Mary was never someone to over indulge and she was more likely to miss a meal then to eat a lot. If she ever believed she was gaining weight, she would exercise or eat less immediately so the problem would not continue. That was how she saw it a problem that irked her perfection.
Always a meticulous person, Mary maintains an impeccable physical appearance. She keeps her dark hair very neat and styled, either up out of her eyes or hanging loose. Her clothes are handled in a similar way: Always pressed, clean and while not necessarily of the latest fashion (something she has no interest in whatsoever) are normally stylish. Naturally conservative she generally wears robes that is not revealing and of darker fabrics. In her time she is stuck with mostly hand me downs and second hand clothes, but she cares for them and attempts to repair them with magic so they do not appear as sub standard.
PB: Roxane Mesquida. I do not have any alternatives, but suggestions are welcome. I did have difficulty trying to find someone.
LIKES: Dark Arts, snakes, being in control, books, red wine, isolation, people who adore her, red meat and an odd fondness for chocolate DISLIKES: Being weak, dirt, being disrespected, Dumbledore, muggles, sausages, being controlled, sexism, tears in her clothes, gossipy women, having to act like she is not in control PATRONUS: She does not have one preferring to control the dementors in other ways, though if she had one, it would be a snake. BOGGART: Both as a woman and as a child, Mary was afraid of death. It was the one thing she could not understand and it would be the ultimate weakness to succumb to. Thus, her boggart would be her own corpse. WAND:13 1/2 inches, yes, phoenix feather. SPECIAL ABILITIES/POWERS:
PERSONALITY:
From her childhood in the orphanage, Mary learned that weaknesses were inexcusable: Strength and power were all that mattered so she could never be controlled. Emotions were a weakness, as if displayed, others could use them to their advantage. Instead she presents an iron facade, though underneath it she can still feel joy, anger, passion and it is only when the emotions are extreme that they escape. If they ever do escape, it is wise to be far away especially with an explosive temper that can be deadly.
However, affection and empathy she cannot feel. As a child, she never experienced or was shown love so she never developed properly in this area. She never saw the positives of love, only the negatives in how they could induce vulnerability. Now, in her teens, Mary does not have the emotional capacity to feel such emotions and even if she did she would not allow himself to. She scoffs when others feel such emotions and they are only useful to her when she can use them to manipulate others. Very rarely, a type of fondness can develop towards a person, but it is not true affection. It can instead be described as how a person would feel about a favourite possession: She may like it though she has no qualms about tossing it away the possession should its usefulness disappear.
Towards her enemies or those she wants to punish similarly, she does not waver. In the heat of battle or through torture she never hesitates for she literally has no conscience. She is a complete psychopath devoid of the ability to rationalise that hurting others is wrong thinking instead as only how it could advantage her. Instead she tortures without hesitation, often taking sadistic pleasure in the way her curses allow another way for her to have complete domination over others.
Despite her complete coldness throughout her life, Mary always had the ability to create a charming facade. Always observant, she analyses others to determine exactly what they wish to see and often she would create that front appearing as extremely charming and pleasant. Her conscious is not impacted in the slightest and she will happily lie and manipulate others. Since she is young, she is not to the stage where her reputation can gain followers, so instead she will charm anyone she meets. Despite the fact that she was born in a poor orphanage, she never allows such aspects of her upbringing to be shown. She instead always appears as perfectly cultured and refined. Her actions are always carefully planned and measured and her words even more so. To individuals she will happily flatter and only say exactly what others want to hear. It is only on very rare occasions when her temper is at her most explosive (basically never) will she ever slip and say the wrong thing (unless he does not realise it is incorrect because of her inability to understand people’s ability to love). Simply Mary appears as the idle women. Immaculately dressed and gifted with good looks, she will charm and flirt with men who she encounter. She will appear as a trophy on their arm, but that is merely her luring them into her web. In reality she is manipulating them the whole time: Pushing them in the right direction with a pretty smile until they are close enough that she can reveal the truth and pull them into line. Of course, this is just now. When she grows older and she has enough influence, she will throw those measures aside and merely rely on her power to have power (ie adult Voldemort).
In front of a crowd, it is the same where she will happily take up the podium in front of an infinite number of spectators. Blessed with a snake tongue (and not just related to her ability to speak to serpents) she is an inspirational speaker and cuts a charismatic presence. Despite the evil she preachers, it is almost impossible that people will be able to ignore her. She can persuade others through a variety of tools she has sharpened through her life seducing them to her side and leading them (better described as ordering them) through what she requires them to do.
Ever since she was young, Mary was sure that she was destined for greatness and strove for it through her life. The quest dominates her life and she will always work to ensure it is the case. The fact that at this age there is an expectation (especially generated by the matrons in the orphanage) that woman should not have the same ambitions as men, Mary throws that aside. She may appear that way, but she believes she is greater than anyone be they male or female.
She is far from a lazy woman and will concentrate on tasks until they are finished to perfection. She always demands that perfection and could spend days working out the most minuscule details in her plans. This ambition is not just what other normal people may dream of. For her dreams are far from normal: She literal seeks to control the world. She has never let this rest as a dream for he does not have dreams just visions on what to work towards. If she has a thought that she wants something she will get it no matter what (or that is what she thinks anyway).
It is not just this intense line of determination that allows her to succeed. Quite simply, Mary is a genius. In the orphanage she learned at an extraordinary speed picking up basic skills faster than anyone around her. It was no different through her studies in magic where she was able not just to memorise what needed to be learnt, but had the ability to manipulate knowledge to create other spells that she needed. Incredibly resourceful she will always find a way to achieve what she wants. Also possessing an inquisitive edge to her personality she has an obsession with always being ahead. On top of creating her own skills, she will research obsessively to ensure her skills flourish. If she wants to know something she will find his answer no matter the cost for he can never allow himself to be ignorant.
However, all of this has its price. Mary is above all extremely arrogant and proud. In some ways it is understandable for her skills do deserve a certain amount of pride, but her self belief goes up and above this to clear narcissism. She believes that she is literally the greatest woman alive in every area and that no one could ever be worthy or a match for her. It leads her to underestimate her foes, though often it is hardy an issue for in reality very few could challenge her. It is a compounded problem with every victory her self belief raises and so of course eventually she will be destined for a fall. In the same way it impacts her interaction with others for on top of being able to feel no affection towards her, she always believes she is superior to them. She has yet to become the Dark Lady that her Death Eaters will grovel to so this is not quite at an advanced stage. However, she is still just as arrogant that she realises that she is not at the stage that everyone will bow at her presence so she will hide these feelings.
Fiercely independent she works alone either in the planning stages or in the tasks themselves, especially as she has not gathered her Death Eaters. She always prefers to be alone. She believes she has no need for the presence of others unless she requires anything. Often she feels most content when she is sitting alone with some ancient manuscript in complete silence, immersed in her own thoughts.
FAMILY: Father- Merrion Gaunt (deceased) who gave a love potion to Mary II before he stopped giving her the potion and Mary left him. Broken hearted and having lost his magic, he lived on the streets before he eventually died. Mother- Mary Riddle II (deceased). The daughter of a high class family, she gave birth to her daughter in secret, put her up for adoption and tried to forget about her. However, she was eventually killed by her daughter, along with her parents. Paternal Grandfather- Thomas Riddle (deceased) who was killed along with his daughter and wife by his grandchild. Paternal Grandmother- Mary Riddle I (deceased) who Mary Jr murdered when she killed the rest of her family. Maternal Grandfather- Marvoltia Gaunt (deceased), who died after she was unable to care for herself after her son and daughter were not around. Mary never met her, but if she had, she would not have cared for the woman considering her weak for having to rely on others Uncle- Morfinia Gaunt (deceased) who Mary was disappointed to discover was mentally disturbed. Mary only used her to gain the information she needed, before she framed her for the murder of the Riddles. Ancestor- S____ Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts and well known for her campaign to prohibit muggleborns being admitted to the school. Slytherin is the only person Mary is proud of being related to. HISTORY:
Just like in canon, the one who all would grow to fear, was born on New Years Eve 1926. Mary Riddle III was born to Merrion Gaunt(canon- Merope) and Mary Riddle II (canon- Tom). The Gaunt line was related to Slytherin and Merrion lived a defeated life with his mother and sister. Falling in love with the squire's daughter, he enchanted her with a love potion and they ran off together. Eventually, believing that Mary would finally be in love with him, he stopped using the love potion, but disgusted, Mary fled from Merrion back to her parent's home. While Merrion moved to live on the streets where he eventually perished, Mary was already pregnant with her lover's child. When they were together they did discuss naming the child with the idea of Mary Marvoltia (after Mary and Merrion's mothers), but it was not something Mary considered when she decided to keep the child. Hiding away in her parent's home, she carried the child to term and gave birth to her. However, she did not plan to keep her daughter. Instead she left her on the steps of an orphanage and, with a sudden change of heart, she gave her daughter the names they had originally planned- Mary Marvoltia Riddle.
Life in the orphanage was far from pleasant. It gave the children what they needed to survive but it was meagre, cold in winter and the matrons had no time to spend on any individual orphan. Young Mary Riddle coped by keeping quiet and to herself, thus she never developed affection for anyone and no one was ever able to show any affection towards her. Her isolation was boosted by the realisation that she was ‘special’. From as long as she could remember, there was always a force that would help her when she wanted it: Creatures did her biding, objects became animated and people would hurt if they did anything to her. She became arrogant: Determined that she should have what the others had and she squirrelled away the other orphans possessions and scared or hurt anyone with her magic if they annoyed or attempted to hurt her.
At the age of eleven, like a muggleborn, a teacher at Hogwarts invited her to Hogwarts and told her about her gift. For Mary, it was Dumbledore and looking back on her life, Mary is frustrated at the foolishness she showed by telling Dumbledore the extent of the control on her magic. It was further proof that emotions should never control her judgement.
Instead, at Hogwarts, she kept her secrets to herself (especially about her upbringing) and for the most part she was successful. She worked hard in classes and boosted by her natural intelligence and magical prowess she excelled. The lack of a powerful family name was a problem in Slytherin and she compensated with an infectious and charming personality. In her early years she was friendly with her housemates and presented the perfect front. Before long she had a crowd of ‘friends’ around her and quickly developed a following around her, though, for Mary, she had no regard for any of them and they were only around as long as they remained useful to her (a trait that continued throughout her life).
Like almost all orphans, she obsessed about her birth and, being at Hogwarts, she had the perfect place to research. Almost all wizards passed through the halls and she knew her parents must be wizards for she had experienced at the muggle orphanage how weak muggles were. She was unsuccessful in finding any evidence of her mother, but another element of her heritage began to develop: That she was the Heir of Slytherin. It was exciting for young Mary and it led to an obsession to find Slytherin’s hidden chamber. It was an incredible power to be able to launch a hidden monster on anyone he desired: Preferably mudbloods who cankered the halls of the school her bloodline dictated should be hers. In her fifth year, she was successful and killed one boy before she was forced to close the school because of Dumbledore’s suspicions.
However, the opening of the Chamber of Secrets also gave her another angle to uncover her heritage. The Slytherin line was poorly documented, yet it led her to the Gaunts where the eldest descendant had a name that matched what she was told was her grandmother’s: Marvoltia. The Gaunt residence was a mammoth disappointment: Her grandmother was long dead and her aunt was insane and lived in a hobble. Yet what was worse was the truth about his mother: She was a mere muggle and, from what she was told, her mother left his father when she found out he was a wizard. Mary was furious, but was still controlled enough to modify her aunt’s memory and use her aunt’s wand to kill her mother and grandparents. It was after this that she fashioned herself a new name ‘Lady Viraldermort’, shedding herself of any evidence of the muggle blood that was the only thing that tainted her.
Throughout her life, Mary despised weakness, she always thought she was better than others and thus she hated the idea of the ultimate failure: Death. Mary could not allow herself to sink to that low, so instead she concentrated on her quest for immortality. She found her answer with the horcruxes, but she could not rest her faith in one object, so she would split her soul into seven pieces securing herself for life. At this point she has only made one (the diary) and is currently wearing the Gaunt Ring before she makes it into a horcrux. Currently, she is in her 7th year and rather content with the situation and
THREE RANDOM FACTS: 1. She is naturally left handed. In the orphanage, especially because of its association with evil, she was taught and forced to use her right hand. It was shaky at first, but over time her use of her right hand became easier. When hse grew older, she practised with both hands so she is almost ambidextrous. 2. Mary has a mixed opinion about her appearance. While she does appreciate the usefulness of her good looks and often uses these charms, ever since seeing her mother when she killed her, she now hates her looks and how she resembles her. 3. She mutters in her sleeps. Always someone whose mind is so active during the day and who keeps so many things quiet. She can tend to obsess about things and when sleeping she cannot help, but mutter quietly about them.
samples FIRST PERSON:
[Cursed Private]
There is something fundamentally wrong about this situation. That much is clear. The mannerisms and clothes of people are not normal and clearly something strange is occurring. I was at breakfast in the Great Hall, but now here I am in a strange alley. It could be London, but London does not look like this. Somehow I have been taken somewhere, but that seems impossible. I would never allowed myself to be taken, especially without my knowledge.
Now, I have just moved into the shadows to watch the chaos in front of me as two groups begin to duel. I am unsure why, but I do not care, if they manage to kill themselves it could be amusing. I could intervene, though, why would I? I shall wait until I can gather some information then act.
[End Curse]
Where am I? It is clearly not Hogwarts and the clothes worn are so strange. Would anyone be able to notify of me where I am? It would be very much appreciated.
